Rescuers Down Under

Words and Photos care of Mike Gabriel.

Rescuers Down Under Research trip to Australia. We were the first animation crew at Disney to demand we go to the actual country and do the research before making the film. The studio naturally looked at this as an unnecessary boondogle since it had never been done as far as I know. I vowed to pay my own way if I had to. Peter Schneider relented—or should I say Jeffrey Katzenberg must have relented—-or should I say Michael Eisner must have relented— and allowed us two weeks to explore the continent of Australia. A great experience. This is Joe Ranft, Joe’s first head of story opportunity, and Maurice (Pixote Hunt) our art director at Uluru or Ayres Rock in the middle of the outback. (more…)

The Bushwacker

Monday, March 24th, 2008
The Bushwacker truck was a polygonal based model designed by Gay Lawrence and Valerio Ventura and modeled by CG artist Andrew Schmidt using Wavefront Software. Above is an example of a hiddenline removal printout. This is created by assigning sections of polygons into various smoothing groups so it would render out as line work which would better integrate with the rest of the 2D film.

The above image is a color model print out from a CAPS color model station. The hiddenline removal printout was transferred electronically into CAPS where colors and RGB values were assigned that would get transferred to shaders for use in Renderman software.

The crew of Rescuers Down Under at a park in Glendale. Rescuers Down Under was the first Walt Disney Feature animated film to use CAPS (Computer Animation Production System). This proprietary system designed by PIXAR software engineers utilized state of the art scanners, digital paint and composite systems along with optical printers and produced every animated picture until Chicken Little in 2004.
